How to connect NSW BioNet species sightings (OData)

NSW DCCEEW

NSW BioNet exposes the Atlas of NSW Wildlife as an OData v4 service with Darwin Core field names. The service document at the base URL lists the entity sets, including SpeciesSightings_CoreData.

Always use $select and $top (with $skip or @odata.nextLink to page) — the full set is about 17 million rows. Filter with $filter, e.g. on scientificName or eventDate.

Steps

  1. Find the base URL. Use https://data.bionet.nsw.gov.au/biosvcapp/odata/ — docs at https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/animals-and-plants/biodiversity/nsw-bionet/web-services.
  2. Auth. Catalogued as Open — none for public sightings.
  3. Try an example request.
    curl -s 'https://data.bionet.nsw.gov.au/biosvcapp/odata/SpeciesSightings_CoreData?$top=1&$select=scientificName,eventDate,dcterms_rights'
  4. Licence. CC BY 4.0. Read the publisher terms before production use.
  5. Agent notes. OData v4 service (Darwin Core fields) over the BioNet Atlas of NSW Wildlife; ~16.9 million sightings in SpeciesSightings_CoreData at probe ($count=true). Use $top/$skip, $filter, $select and $count; follow @odata.nextLink if returned. Sensitive species locations are generalised. Licence CC BY 4.0 per each record's dcterms_rights. Rate limits: unknown.
