How to connect the QLDTraffic GeoJSON API

Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads

Queensland TMR serves current road events (hazards, crashes, congestion, flooding, roadworks, special events) as a GeoJSON FeatureCollection. Every request needs an apikey query parameter; TMR publishes a shared public key in its API specification.

The public key is globally limited to 100 requests/minute, so poll /v2/events/past-one-hour for changes rather than refetching the full collection. Register with TMR for your own key for production use. For the NSW equivalent, see Browse APIs.

Steps

  1. Find the base URL. Use https://api.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au/v2/events — docs at https://www.data.qld.gov.au/dataset/131940-traffic-and-travel-information-geojson-api.
  2. Auth. Catalogued as Key — public shared key published in the TMR API specification: apikey=3e83add325cbb69ac4d8e5bf433d770b (globally limited to 100 requests/minute); register with TMR for your own key.
  3. Try an example request.
    curl -s 'https://api.qldtraffic.qld.gov.au/v2/events?apikey=3e83add325cbb69ac4d8e5bf433d770b'
  4. Licence. CC BY 4.0. Read the publisher terms before production use.
  5. Agent notes. GeoJSON FeatureCollection of current hazards, crashes, congestion, flooding, roadworks and special events (537 features at probe); /v2/events/past-one-hour returns only events changed in the last hour — poll that for deltas. Whole collection returned in one response, no pagination. Rate limit: shared public key is 100 requests/minute globally. Licence CC BY 4.0 (data.qld.gov.au dataset record); data provided 'as is'.
