How to connect the Queensland open data API (CKAN)

Queensland Government

Queensland's open-data portal at www.data.qld.gov.au is a CKAN site with the standard action API under /api/3/action/. Public reads need no key.

Use package_search to find datasets (q=bushfire returned 40 on 16 Oct 2026, and fq=res_format:CSV narrows to datasets with a CSV). The CKAN datastore is enabled too, so resources flagged datastore_active can be queried row by row with datastore_search. Most datasets carry CC-BY-4.0, but check license_id on each one.

For live road conditions in Queensland, see the QLDTraffic guide.

Steps

  1. Find the base URL. Use https://www.data.qld.gov.au/api/3/action/package_search — docs at https://www.data.qld.gov.au/article/standards-and-guidance/using-data/api.
  2. Auth. Catalogued as Open read — none for public read.
  3. Try an example request.
    curl -s 'https://www.data.qld.gov.au/api/3/action/package_search?rows=1'
  4. Licence. Unknown — not stated by the publisher. Read the publisher terms before production use.
  5. Agent notes. Live 2026-08-23: 188,850 packages, 97 orgs. Includes GSQ geology dump.
